Gateway College Football Team Are Through To National Finals For A Second Year
On Friday 8th December, Gateway Sixth Form College were one of 12 teams from across the region who took part in the Association of Colleges (AoC), East Midlands 7-a-side Football Tournament in Nottingham.
In a similar display to last year’s play, Gateway College finished top of their group, following wins against Loughborough College, Wyggeston and Queen Elizabeth II College, Grantham College, and draws against Burton and South Derbyshire College and Brooksby Melton College.
In the semi-final, they beat the runners up from Pool B, Tresham College 2 – 0 and in the final, the team ran out 2 - 1 winners over Pool A rivals, Brooksby Melton College.
Gateway now go on to represent the East Midlands region for the second year at the 40th AoC National Championships, which will be held at the University of Nottingham in April 2018.
Sports student and the teams Goal Keeper Arjuna said, “It was a good experience to play against other colleges and teams we haven’t met before. We enjoyed the challenge and are looking forward to playing in the finals.”
Gateway College Football Coach and Teacher of Sports Rob Hawkins said, “The players were phenomenal; they were incredibly motivated and worked tirelessly to retain the title. They are excited to be representing the East Midlands region at the National Championships again. Karol, Cosmas, Arjuna and Ayuub deserve a special mention, as they will be making their second trip to the Finals”.
The Gateway College squad are Arjuna Govia, Naeem Adam, Mohammed Mulla, Ayuub Moallim, Bhagyesh Patel, Cosmas Matwasa, Nigel Mavura, Mamadu Djalo, Dylan Kanhukamwe and Karol Pinczynski. We wish them lots of luck in the finals in April.
