Mathematics - GCSE Foundation Tier

INTRODUCTION

This is a  course for students who have already achieved a grade D in GCSE Maths and wish to improve it to a grade C. It is a modular course comprising three units.

LENGTH OF COURSE

GCSE Math is a one year course.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

This course is principally for students who already have a grade D in GCSE maths.  A range of additional courses are available in order to meet the needs of all students. 

COURSE AIMS

To give students who are close to achieving a grade C in GCSE  Maths the opportunity to raise their grade to a C and in doing  so, to develop skills in number and data handling as well as  wider mathematical skills in areas such as algebra, graphs and geometry

HOW WILL I STUDY?

You will experience a variety of teaching styles:

  • Formal
  • Individual with strong teacher support
  • Investigational
  • Use of computers
  • Smartboard

You will have 3.5 hours of timetabled lessons per week and you will be expected to put in another 4 hours study per week outside of lessons.

CONTENT

Unit  1 Statistics and Number
This unit assesses all the statistics and probability content of the specification. Additionally, some appropriate aspects of number will be tested.

Unit 2 Unit 2: Number and Algebra
This unit concentrates on those number topics which are better tested without a calculator and aspects of algebra where a calculator is not required.

Unit 3 Unit 3: Geometry and Algebra
This unit assesses all the geometry and measures content of the specification as well as areas of algebra where a calculator is required and the graphical methods in algebra.

26.7% of the GCSE mathematics assessment

Unit 2 Unit 2: Number and Algebra
1 hour 15 mins exam (Non-calculator)
33.3% of the GCSE mathematics assessment

Unit 3 Unit 3: Geometry and Algebra
1 hour 30 mins exam (Calculator)
40% of the GCSE mathematics assessment

WHERE NEXT?

A grade C or above in mathematics is an essential qualification for entry to many courses at university.  It may also be required in order to progress onto further training or employment. It is required in order to enter some professions e.g. Teaching
