Numeracy - Functional Skills

INTRODUCTION

Functional Skills Numeracy means, that when you have completed this course, you will have improved the skills you already have, been encouraged to learn and developed new skills, knowledge and understanding, and become confident and competent in being able to apply those skills to real life experiences. All students at Gateway College who have not yet attained a D grade at GCSE Maths are required to follow a Functional skills Numeracy course along with their main programme of study

 

HOW WILL I STUDY?

You will have classes for 3 ½ hours per week plus ½ hr tutorial in a group of students who are studying a the same level as you. Your Individual Learning Plan (ILP) will help You to understand the skills you need to learn. You will have time to regularly discuss your progress and develop targets with your teacher. There is a maths workshop every lunch time where you can go for extra tuition or exam/end of unit test revision.

 

CONTENT

There are two levels of the functional skills numeracy course: Entry Level (1,2,&3) and Foundation (Level 1). At the beginning of the year you will take an assessment and the results along with your GCSE qualification will dictate your course allocation. Each course is designed to last for one year. The courses are split into 6 units and you will have the opportunity to Progress through the levels as your ability and progress dictate

Number, Statistics, Fractions, Decimals & Percentages, Shape & Space, Measures

 

ASSESSMENT

At the end of each unit you will complete an assessment so that you can measure your personal progress. An end of course exam takes place in May where you will be able to gain a nationally recognised qualification
