Standard Entry Requirements
Grade D/Grade 3 at GCSE English/English Language or a Pass in Functional Skills English Level 2 or ESOL at Level 2.
Assessment of Course
You will take the WJEC GCSE English Language exams at the end of the year.In Paper 1 you will read and answer questions on an unseen 20th century literature text. You will also write a descriptive, narrative, creative, imaginative piece – for example, or a story.
In Paper 2 you will read and answer questions about two unseen non-fiction texts: one from the 19th century and one from the 21st century. You will also write a transactional/persuasive piece - for example, a letter, an article, a review, a speech.
You will also have a Speaking assessment. For this, you will make a formal presentation to a group of students. This assessment is done in class and is recorded on video.
This is an intensive one-year course and is a key element of your programme of study. The course is designed to support you achieve your English GCSE. You will develop your communication, literacy and learning skills to support your work in other subjects across the College, in your future studies and in employment.
Achievement of GCSE English Language is a requirement for progression to higher level study. It is also one of the main indicators for employers when assessing a job applicant’s language, literacy and communication skills.
